About Little Heath Farm Nursery
Little Heath Farm Nursery is in a peaceful location adjacent National Trust Area of National Beauty land. It has a lovely cottage garden ambience amongst the wildness of nature. For many years, the Nursery has specialised in and become known for Alpines. Alongside that many other plant species are grown on and sold. The Nursery grows a wide range of hardy plants and herbaceous perennials, alongside shrubs, ferns and trees, with many unusual varieties scattered in many of the categories. The Nursery is now run by Vanessa Garstin with her husband Jonathan maintaining the buildings, land and endless repairs.
The Nursery was started in the early 1970s by David Mansfield-Thomas, and subsequently operated by John and Jan Spokes who retired in early 2018. They had been at the Nursery for many years during which time they turned what was once a charming but somewhat neglected site into a quiet and picturesque nursery with a cottage garden atmosphere. After their retirement the Nursery quickly became overgrown before Vanessa and Jonathan took on its revival. John and Jan continue to help Vanessa.
In the summer months, sitting outside amongst the flowers or beneath the grapevine, many visitors enjoy sharing the space with the numerous butterflies and birds that visit the Nursery. It is a perfect way to relax after an afternoon pottering around the Nursery, or just reading and relaxing.
Lower down on the site next to the paddock field we have a small area of woodland where at a later date we intend to create a short woodland walk.
As many of our regulars say, time loses meaning when you visit us. Come here and experience that for yourself. We are sure there is pixie dust in the air here.
The Nursery site also provides the popular Little Heath Tearoom now run by Helena of 'Dottie about cakes' , where (subject to COVID19 restrictions) you can sit and enjoy home-made cake and a pot of tea in vintage china, or have caffetiere coffee. Light lunches will also become available as Helena gets the Tearoom re-established (please see our home page news about how the Tearoom will operate during building works to restore the buildings).
The rooms that used to be a shop will now be available for meetings, small events and workshop type sessions, all subject to Covid restrictions.
